A sweet night I do not want to forget

            I really, really love pulling up into her bumpy driveway and taking a step back in time. My grandmother’s house—and my grandmother herself—is effortlessly and timelessly beautiful. Her frame is small yet gives the strongest hugs of welcome. We don our aprons and make a good meal of chicken and mashed potatoes, broccoli and asparagus, salad and rolls. After good conversation and full bellies, we pull out three big shoeboxes of old photographs and letters, some dating back to the 40’s. I flipped through pictures in awe of the beauty and tradition of my past family. I see pictures of my grandmother in grade school, of my mom as a baby, and my aunt in bra-less tank tops next to uncles flexing their muscles. Everyone was gorgeous and happy and real. It makes me long for the ease and joy of “way back then.” I do enjoy the advances of technology and all the modern accommodations but I am ever grateful for the moments when I get to come to my Jamamama’s house, where the computer is called “the calculator that I do not know how to use” and where I smile as I walk up the old staircase to the little bedroom where my mom use to sleep, a glass of clinking ice water in my hand and warmness in my heart.
